I don’t recommend you make a group booking here. I recently had a birthday here for around 20 guests. The communication wasn’t at all smooth leading up. I had to mention 3 times that there would be someone attending who was lactose intolerant and even went in the day before the event to check everything was actually booked because no one had emailed me back. The MORNING of the event they emailed me asking to confirm numbers – even though I had been into the restaurant myself the day before to do this in person after no response by email. They also had my mobile number so I don’t understand why they didn’t phone, if they were still confused. We also felt like we were in the cheap seats a bit, my friends were joking that maybe they didn’t want to wash a whole lot of napkins, because we had paper and everyone else in the restaurant had cloth. When I went to order sides for the table we could only choose from fries and salad. When paying $70 for an entree and main, it would have been nice to have something other than fries to accompany it. Although, the salad was really nice. The food in general was very good and the staff very friendly. When we got back to Auckland a few days later I went through the bill and realised we had been charged for an extra bottle of wine. When I rang Cable Bay to discuss this, they said that there wasn’t anything they could do about it as it was too long ago. I guess its my fault. I didn’t think there would be any trouble trusting them with the bill as they have a good reputation and are a quality establishment. Considering our bill was over $1,600 and we spent over $300 at the bar before and after the lunch I didn’t think I would get the response I did, when I rang telling them what had happened with the bill. We spent nearly $2,000 in one afternoon and they won’t refund for a bottle of wine that cost $52? I wasn’t going to argue over it, so just left it. Just put a huge damper on my birthday. For groups under 10 people I bet this place would be amazing. 10 or more, check your bill before you leave – apparently they ask you to do this, no one actually said this to me. I just honestly didn’t think I would have to.
We went to Cable Bay in early November 2012 to celebrate a 40th birthday and everyone in our party had a great time and very much enjoyed the fantastic food, the attentive service and the superb surroundings.
The food was excellent with the usual food envy around the table, though everyone loved what they had. The wine list was also very approachable.
Of special note was the children’s menu. Our daughter enjoyed (and devoured) some lovely beef, vegetables and chips that was prepared with the same skill and attention as all the adult meals, which was a noticeable difference for us as many other restaurants (even some claiming to be fine dining) serve up chicken nuggets etc for children as almost second grade cheap food. Our daughter was treated as an equal within our party and enjoyed running around on the grass out the front overlooking the harbour. She’s already asked us when we’re going back.
A great place to go, and we’re very much intending to head back there soon.
4th visit but first time for dinner.
Wine and tapas have always been brilliant so we decided to do dinner..
exceptional, food, wine, service!
Service was professional but casual/relaxed and welcoming.
The same bottle of wine in the tasting area was exactly double the price in the restaurant… Go figure that one out.
Another spectacular winery with an arty view. We didn’t order off the menu as had just been to Mudbrick, instead we sat outside and enjoyed a wine and soaked up the views. I’ll be back for a meal as the menu looked tantalisingly yummy.
There is only one way to really enjoy Cable Bay and that is by helicopter landing on the lawn. As the packages contain the meal and return transfers they are reasonable.
The view back to Auckland over the harbor matches the wine and food. It is the perfect location to take friends from out of town.
Take a tour of the downstairs dining room and cellar.
The service never disappoints.
The view alone melts away all feelings of stress, a slice of island life heaven, all wrapped up in a lovely designed restaurant. Someone clearly has both ambition, love and money and the customer benefits from it all.
Now to the food, fresh fish was snapper, simple and beautiful, duck which is something I almost always order when its on the menu was as good as nearly all in Auckland city except perhaps the French Cafe who compliment it with mandarin. Cant quite remember what the young ones had but they liked it and wanted to go explore the the helicopter pad.
Desserts were shared and deliciously consumed by everyone at the table.
This is a serious restaurant making a name for itself, highly recommended and the best we have enjoyed on Waiheke to date!
What can I say, Cable Bay is a benchmark for others to follow. It has everything you expect from a top restaurant without the snobbery.
Gorgonzola Mousse on Toasted Brioche with Cherry Confiture and Walnuts…mmmmmmmmm still makes my mouth water to think of it. Don’t miss this treat of a restaurant or the fabulous sunset looking back towards mainland Auckland. (Waiheke was a real highlight of our 6 weeks in NZ.)
Excellant food, wines and service here. the staff really know there wines and are really friendly to talk to. it has a awesome view out over the gulf during the day or at night a wonderful view back to the lights of auckand city.
