Loved this place. Ate there recently with my partner and just thought it was so different from what you would expect. Such a super relaxed atmosphere where everyone seemed to fit!. I noticed that there were two girls at the bar giggling and chatting with some amazing colourful looking drinks in a jar ? then there was the couple with the two kids who all seemed to be having a great time and a really large group up by the window who definitely were celebrating something big. Lots of small groups around and a group of women on the lounge seats seemed to be having a long catchup. I always look around, observe people and take it all in but this was awesome the way everyone just seemed so involved and relaxed. The music was so good, Spanish guitar and the food was excellent. I had one of the cheaper taco meals which was so fresh and yummy and partner had the Brisket. We shared one of the best desserts I have ever had, Lemon and Meringue with Tequila. Sadly we are going away for several months but I hope I will be able to return.
I had a light lunch here on a nice sunny weekend day in Wellington. The interior is quite amazing and I had a little wander around to take it all in before we sat down. I experienced great service – friendly and fast. The food was lovely. Everything was clearly homemade and the flavours were fresh and delicious!
Went there a few weeks ago with some out of town folk. We wanted to go to Viva Mexico, but the left bank market was on so chose somewhere that wouldn’t be too busy. Had a gluten free diner with us, who thought Mexican would be great, she usually has no trouble as they have corn tortillas. No corn tortillas they said. In fact, I’m not sure what their tortillas are actually made from, so thin, stodgy and fatty. Bland slop on the inside. Uninspiring sauce.
Everyone was pretty disappointed with the food as we knew of many better Mexican places we could have been at.
On the plus side, the corn chips were good (but there was more guac than chip), and the slushy margaritas were good.
I just saw on their website that they have a whole load of corn tortillas on their lunch menu…. Why could you not have gotten some out for us???
Went for lunch with a bigger group the other day. Ordered the taco dish for $18. Utter rip-off! The portion is tiny and the taste just average. The dimension of the soft taco is appr 8cm radius with a tiny handful of shredded chicken and topped with red onion. The service is slow and no one knows what to do/where to go etc. When I paid I was asked how my meal was and told them that I’m unhappy about size and taste. I got a big smile back and nothing else. Well Caliente. You know what you get for that? A lost customer. Never again.
Visited the place a little while ago with a friend who loves her Mexican food.
The food itself was okay nothing special. Mine was a little cold but it tasted average.
The reason for my bad review however was the service. From the beginning it was just awful. The main waitress who look liked the boss has a terrible attitude and pretty much laughed at me when I ordered and asked for little dairy due to a medical condition. The whole time she made us feel uncomfortable.
There was another waitress too. Once our food arrived my friend has a burrito and she asked about what the sauce on top of it was. The waitress did not know so the head waitress came back and got veyr shirty with us about that is how it is served. My friend quickly apologised and said she liked the sauce and just wondered what it was as it was nice. It was very uncomfortable and I was then too scared to complain that my food was cold and that we had not received all that we had ordered.
I will not return.
Really enjoyed our dinner here…had the chicken quesadillas which were perfect – great size and very tasty. The restaurant was pretty full when we visited, but we found the service friendly and attentive. Our waiter talked me into a margarita (then I talked myself into another!) and after initially abstaining from dessert, I couldn’t help digging into my husband’s chocolate, chilli & vanilla dish….Heaven!
I would definitely recommend
I’ve been to Caliente for dinner a few times now and always look forward to going back. Its so hard to pick just 1 or 2 things from “food to share” and “mains.” We always end up ordering too much and are unable to fit dessert in which is a shame because the desserts look amazing!
We’ve always had good service and the staff are all very friendly. The décor is very colourful and fun and lots to look at! I have a couple of margaritas every time I go and have nearly made my way through the list – all delicious!
All in all the service is great, drinks are great and food is amazing!
Can’t wait to go back for dessert!
Food was overpriced and decidedly average. 30 plus pork belly mixed in with 17 bucks for two tacos? Es no bueno.
Service was the real let down. Ended up ordering drinks from the bar after a long wait. Hopefully teething problems but unfortunately I think not.
Worst meal a group of 3 have had in many years. Not authentic Mexican, very Kiwi style and mass produced. Got served a warm snickers milkshake which we asked to have redone cold, they simply added crushed ice. Small portions, tasteless, very expensive. We made a slight complaint very early about the milkshake, later we were asked about the food, to which we replied that we were disappointed compared to the review and other Mexican restaurants we have tried. It was not acknowledged and overall was very disappointing. We will never return.
Really good food and service!
Menu is in Spanish which makes you feel like you are back in las tierras de Speedy Gonzalez!
You won’t be able to have just 1 margarita! promise!
Dessert was the highlight of the night, great experience!
We’ve eaten at all of the Mexican restaurants in Wellington and surrounding suburbs, and this place is hands down the best and most authentic restaurant so far.
As soon as I stepped into the cavernous space, I felt transported back to San Miguel de Allende, a beautiful little Mexican town set atop the hills of Guanajuato, Mexico. There are little artisan touches throughout, and lots of festive colour.
Our party ordered the classic margaritas on the rocks, which are excellent with the rim of salt.
For the entrees, we had the guacamole with salsa and freshmade corn chips. Man, it’s been a long time since I tasted fresh corn chips. It made me SO HAPPY. Little touches like this throughout our meal made the visit worthwhile.
The taquitoes were scrumptious, with a lovely balance between the sweet and acidic tang of the pineapple with the richness of the braised duck; definitely a standout for the evening.
For the main, duck mole. Compliments to the chef on making an excellent mole for my duck, which was cooked to medium-rare perfection with gorgeous crispy skin.
I had a taste of everything, and enjoyed it all.
We had no room for dessert, but will definitely be back for it as well as the new street food lunch menu. I love a good taco and can’t wait to try theirs.
Authentic Latin atmosphere and great music. Awesome venue and a cool place to come with friends.
Menu are all in spanish which makes selection entertaining. The waiter was able to help and everyone liked their choices. Good sized portions and most importantly delicious!
We have been living in New Zealand for more than 2 years. We have eaten Mexican food before, but nothing quite like this.
We had dinner at Caliente and we had Cochinita Pibil (Crispy Pork Belly) & Brisket Birria (Braised Brisket) and they said that it was cooked for more than 2 days, Wow!!! It literally melted in the mouth. Our mains were absolutely delicious. The mains at Caliente were incredibly authentic, we were both transported to Mexico.
We decided to finish a lovely meal with dessert….and my god was that a good decision! We had the Pan De Muerto and Chocolate, Chile and Vanilla…..it was to die for! The Chocolate Chile was rich, creamy and had a wonderful kick of chile at the end. My partner said his Pan De Muerto was amazing and soft. Our waiter told us that it is baked fresh on site every day and we can see that she wasn’t telling fibs!
It was such a lovely night, we will be going back again soon.
As soon as we walked in the door the music and atmosphere was very inviting. We started with incredible margaritas to accompany our food to share which was the start of a delicious experience in real Mexican cuisine.
The quality of what was served was beyond anything I have experienced from a Mexican restaurant and I would go so far to say this has to be one of The southern hemisphere’s best Mexican dining experiences.
The decor and lighting and expeience of the waiter is still a work in progress but that was completely overshadowed by the absolute quality of the food. We will be back as this is now my favorite place in Wellington.
Went for lunch with a group and was very impressed. We only tried the quesadillas and burritos but both were very satisfactory – good size portions, delicious, and the side salads were a nice addition too. The price made it a little out of the range of a casual meal but was definitely worth it. Service was attentive and staff were friendly, plus the place has a good atmosphere.
You have to be kidding. $17 for a two-taco plate? No thank you.
I had the fish taco then swapped halfway through with my companion and finished his pork burrito. Both were lovely & I really enjoyed having a good tomatillo salsa on the side. Waiting staff were great & went out of their way to hurry our order through as I was running short of time; much appreciated. I could have taken a little more chilli and did find the portions rather large for a workday lunch. Would love to see a “small plates” section on the menu. Will definitely go again.
Even though the menu we tried was a temporary one for the seven’s, the food was amazing! Definitely recommend!
Also, the thick hot chocolate I had was very good – similar to Scopa’s but not quite as rich.
Very nice decor as well
