Stayed at the hotel over new years came in both mornings for cooked breakfasts – divine except the sausages…i maybe just a country girl not used to small unflavoursome sausages but the next morning i requested not to have them!!
We had dinner here on our last night we both had the caesar salad which was really good! I must also say the service was exceptional great attention to detail!! For dessert we had this brownie with a mocha topping on it! It was divine i really struggled to eat the lot but a definate must try!
If we do come back to Dunedin – we will definately be staying and eating here!!

My husband and took an overseas guest here for dinner, we weren’t expecting a fine dining experience we just wanted to give her a taste of quality New Zealand cuisine. We were so disappointed and embarrassed having taken a guest there. I had the Chicken which was overcooked & dry, the only addition to the meal being two potato croquettes which looked like microwaved frozen fish fingers & didn’t taste much better. The pea puree accompanying my husbands rump steak was lumpy and the side of veges we ordered was also overcooked and bland. We eat out regularly and are new to Dunedin but won’t be returning to this restaurant. Aside from the food the waitresses were nice although one started clearing our plates before my husband had finished his meal.

On the evening of 14 February 2009 a friend and I called in for Dessert and Coffee. My original choice of dessert [Lemon Tart] was unavailable so I opted for the Cheesecake [informed that it was Lemon and Almond-flavoured]. The cheesecake was OK but I could not detect any lemon or almond flavour. However, the main point of this review is to point out the very disappointing experience of my friend who ordered “Carrot cake served warm with a citrus cream cheese icing and cream – $11.50″. What arrived looked like a $3 muffin cut in half – no icing – accompanied by a spoonful of ?cream. My friend loves carrot cake and has eaten lots so knows a good one! She returned her very dry dessert and asked if it could be replaced by the cheesecake. When pointing out our disappointment to the Restaurant Manager she replied “That is how it is here” – no apology, no acknowledgement of our disappointment – and insisted that the spoonful of ?cream was actually the citrus cream cheese icing. [I have always understood icing to be on top of a cake]. Sadly, we will not be returning to Cargills.
