Overview

A unique Indo-Mediterranean style restaurant, specializing in Fish and Seafood, Ela cuisine has pioneered its own style of cuisine with subtle artisanship by infusing the traditional South Indian style cooking with modern trends. ~ The ancient Travancore cuisine with fresh leaves (Ela means ‘leaf’), local ingredients, plus the novel concepts that make Ela Cuisine on-trend, are making this eatery an instant winner with city diners. ~ Ela cuisine is the joint venture of two food-loving families who built their own style of cooking around the spices of Travancore and fresh leaves. Ela Cuisine melds the intricate Travancore style of cooking into Ela cuisine. Think black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, vanilla, nutmeg, tamarind and ginger. ~ Chef George’s orientation to any street or suburb is just on the basis of the availability of food. It is hard to extract a memory from George, where food was not involved. The zeal for food was such that he ran his family restaurant at the age of 15! Years later, a qualified chef with vast overseas culinary experience, George has arrived in Auckland. Chef Johnson of equal passion wields impeccable technique in executing authentic Travancore dishes. ~ The concept and design of Ela cuisine was dreamt up by the two chefs’ spouses, health professionals, who actively researched the medicinal values of Indo Mediterranean spices and the use of fresh herbs. ~ Intricate culinary requirements, mean please allow 15-20 mins to achieve the right flavour, especially for baked fish & rice.

Had authentic Indian food. Enjoyed the spices unique to Indian cuisine.

Had the Beef olathu, Prawns curry and Fish fry. All three were excellent.

The chef was jovial and very welcoming. The service was well tailored to the customers.

Tasty Indian food with a touch of Mediterranean influence. Friendly staff and pleasing ambiance is this classy food court.

We had the pumpkin and beet plus a chicken with cocoon…

Really rather magnificent in its flavours, I had the snapper stuffed with green mango “Manga Meen”. A couple of enthusiastic guys (incl the chef, I think) helped me choose, and recommended the watermelon juice with it ($5) – which was a delicious refreshing complement to the spicy piquant flavours of the fish.

The thin sauce, which came separately in a little bowl, was just so beautiful, I wished there was a bigger bowl of it (in fact that would be my one recommendation for improvement – a bigger bowl of the special Indian sauce please?).

The fish came as a whole snapper, sizzling, and it was sliced open in sections where it had been stuffed with the flavoursome contents, so it was pretty easy to get at the tasty flesh, and avoiding most of the pin bones. (I paid a bit extra to get the snapper instead of kingfish for the lunch serving).

I made a good move coming after the lunch rush hour, so I had plenty of tables to choose from in the Elliott Stables seating area, and it was really peaceful without loads of other bodies in there at the same time! It’s got a cool vibe here anyway.

I would definitely highly recommend this place if you’re into interesting food flavours, and love to try something spicy and a little bit different.
