Reviews for JAX Wine & Tapas Bar
15th January 2014
What can I say. Opportunity of a voucher prompted the visit and was absolutely not disappointed. Loved the compactness of the venue and the attentive service we had.
When we arrived we were offered great wine options, some input into the choice we may like and confirmation of recommendation on our choice.
The tapas are just delicious! Loved the pate, so much so that just couldn’t dream of leaving any behind, so had to ask for more bread at no hassle. As for the cheese, honeycomb balls and the miso beef……well it’s best to stop now and just say – try it! Definitely going back again. Loved it all.

So I tried this place out yesterday. With the voucher deal. However, will base my rating without the voucher.
The tapas were superb, really hope they made them in mains.
$10 for one small tapa was a little pricey considering their location.
However, the taste is really good.
Maybe a little understaffed if the place gets’ busy, however I went after work and it was ok.
Gets hot during summer afternoons, no aircon.
Overall a great experience!

We went here on a deal voucher for five tapas and two glasses of wine. The wine was fabulous and the waiter was super friendly. The décor and place was very nice but tables a little close together. I had to put in an effort to not overhear our neighbours dates!! Also for the price the tapas were really tiny! We can’t complain really as we had a great deal but we definitely wouldn’t go back. We had to stop at McDonalds on the way home!

We went here with a deal voucher. The atmosphere was good, the service was attentive but unobtrusive and the food and wine were excellent. We enjoyed every single one of the tapas. I’m not sure if we would have gone without the voucher, the cost starts to add up very quickly since the portions are not huge.

I have been meaning to go and try Jax for ages, and I am glad I finally did. Manager Carl knows his stuff! He can recommend wines with knowledge and confidence and they accommodated our gluten free diet when preparing our meals. I loved it so much I am now holding a party there! Great decor and ambience and Carl and the chef really knows how to make the experience special

Jax is an intimate spot with opulent decor – red velvet curtains, a stunning chandelier and featured artworks on display. Service was attentive and welcoming. There’s a wide range of wines, beers and cocktails including international options. The menu isn’t long but is varied and interesting, and there was a blackboard special as well as dessert selections. We had the salmon, calamari, risotto cakes and bell peppers, which were all delicious and nicely presented. My one disappointment was that, like other so-called ‘tapas’ I’ve had in NZ to date, they’re not genuine tapas, ie pre-prepared, bite-sized, low-priced bar ‘snacks’. They’re actually made-to-order, small tasting dishes that, because they’re expensive for what you get, aren’t good value for money no matter how tasty and well presented they are. Jax portions seem on the smaller side of small from my experience too, and like other ‘tapas’, are designed for two diners. It’s frustrating to get two or four pieces or a tiny portion of dishes, when there are three of us sharing. Surely it can’t be hard for venues to price their ‘tapas’ individually and adjust the portions to suit numbers? Don’t get me wrong though, other than my general grip about tapas, Jax certainly do what they do very well, and I definitely recommend it as a lovely ambient bar to enjoy a drink and small tasting dish or two.

After reading the reviews I was very excited to find another tapas restaurant in Newmarket to try. We were a table of 5 and our initial impression of the ambiance was good. The French woman who initially seated us was very friendly and personable. However we were then waited upon by a new member of staff who new nothing about the menu and drinks, and kept running to ask questions. After taking our drinks order we waited 25 minutes which was strange since there were only two other tables in the restaurant. We then waited 45 minutes for our food before being told it was going to be another 15 minutes, due to it being the chef’s first night. We were given a complimentary plate of bread and dips, to quash our hunger, however the bread had only been toasted on one side and half of it was burnt. Upon receiving our tapas we were disappointed at the portion sizes and quality. We were mostly disappointed in the lack of communication and attention from our appointed waiter, including not being told about the evening’s specials board which we noticed upon leaving. Upon paying we noticed the kitchen which looked very chaotic and untidy which seemed to reflect our dining experience. Maybe we picked a bad night?

My daughter and I went to Jax just before Christmas and had 4 tapas and a couple of glasses of wine.
We got excellent service as soon as we walked in, and the waitress was great at explaining the menu, specials, and making recommendations about how much we should order as we were there for dinner not just drinks and nibbles.
We ordered the Chilean-style salmon ceviche, Slow-roasted free-range pork belly, Asian marinated duck breast and Grilled hapuku steaks (daily special). We were absolutely delighted with all the choices we made because every dish was delicious. The ingredients were fresh and the flavours were beautifully balanced. The pork was tender, as was the duck. The salmon was perfectly marinated and the hapuku was perfectly cooked. Each dish was also wonderfully presented.
The tapas serving sizes were perfect and the matching wines suggested went well with the meal.
We will definitely be back to Jax in the near future. The service – excellent, the food – faultless, the wine – delicious and the atmosphere – cosy. Couldn’t ask for a better combination!

Excellent place! The tapas were wonderfully tasty & artfully presented dishes. I had rung enquiring about the whisky degustation – & although it was usually reserved for the special tasting evenings, the manager was able to organise it for the 2 of us. A lovely treat!!!
Highly recommended for a cosy evening of yummy food & an eclectic drinks menu!

Jax tapas is amazing!! Have gone back several times to try most of the menu and it’s always delicious! This is a stunning bar, really elegantly decorated with a great photography gallery to make it more interesting. The staff are always very friendly and it has a very relaxed and intimate atmosphere. I can’t wait to go back – you have to try it!

Really lovely, intimate and sophisticated place. Gorgeous wine and whisky selection and beautiful, interesting tapas that are great to share. We spent $40 each on the food and we were absolutely stuffed and was able to try over half of their menu! Perfect little place to catch up with a few friends or bring that special someone.

A great little bar with a lovely atmosphere and very good wait staff in a great location. We dined on the opening night of the Rugby World Cup and surprisingly Jax was rather quiet. Unfortunately our tapas did not have that ’something extra’ and were just okay. It would be great to see the food go to the next level which would make this a great place to dine.

Really elegant, beautifully decorated and sophisticated wine and tapas menu. Quite small, so best for an intimate meal with a few close friends. I like their style of tapas, served on one plate so you are encouraged to share – bacon wrapped prawns and tuna tartare were amazing!!

This lovely intimate little bar next to the Newmarket train station was a gorgeous little secret. Delicious tapas (the seared scallops with prosciutto and chardonnay & citrus jelly were a sensation) a fabulous playlist and beautiful, chic surroundings. Bring friends here if you want a relaxed, sophisticated environment with amazing food. Will definitely be coming again to try the rest of the tantalising menu!

Small, cosy and lovely decor which tempted us to give it a go, but the tapas are tiny and overpriced, so won’t be returning.

Gorgeous little wine & tapas bar… Exactly what Newmarket needed! Great food, beautiful little wine list and a nice selection of single malt whisky… all reasonably priced too! Great service with very friendly staff that actually care what you think about the experience. And what’s more, it’s also a photography gallery with stunning artwork along the wall! They’ve really gone all out in fitting out this stunning space. Make sure you check it out!
