Reviews for Mexicali Fresh

Overpriced crap. $3.50 for a can of sprite. $15 for a crap burrito. Thoroughly disappointed. Average food at best. Sounds like this place is only worth coming to on taco Tuesday, but still, I probably won't be coming back.

I've been here as couple of times between lunch and dinner as its my local and both times I've seen sparrows swoop in and pick at the fillings at the counter when none of the staff are looking. Someone needs to do something about it before someone gets sick. I do like the chain and prefer to go to the one in Krd now.

After a long drive back to Auckland from the Waikato I was looking for something close, good, cheap and not a burger. Mexicali Fresh was definitely a good choice. Super quick service and a decent burrito.
The price isn't that bad and if you are looking for somewhere to grab a nice cheap eat then this is a good option. The burritos are filling and go really nicely with some ice cold mexican cola!

I absolutely love Mexicali! The mince is nicely flavoured for such a affordable place.
If you haven't been to taco Tuesday, you haven't lived life.
Soft or hard shell mince or bean tacos for $3. Like fo real

Popped in for lunch and grabbed a small side of corn chips , re-fried beans , cheese , guacamole and sour cream. Didn't want anything heavy and decided to have a cheeky Budweiser instead of something healthy.Total cost $14.
Have been here a few times before and the service is normally pretty good. In busy periods you have to shuffle along the queue next to one of those elevated eating areas but the Mexicali team tend to throw more staff on in peak periods.
One of their t shirts proclaimed 'practice Safe Mex' which I thought was a good play on words.
Seems to be a regular haunt for some of the tech startups in Newmarket like Vend and Imarda..

OK if you're desperate. The food isn't bad, but it isn't good either. The whole place is rather ho-hum. The food, ambience and service are just about acceptable but not much more.
Mexican food is noted for its depth of flavour. If this was Mexican i'd eat my sombrero. Pretty flavour-less overall. Apparently there were pickles hiding somewhere that you could help yourself to, but no-one told us that.
The food was scooped out of pre-prepared bins (for want of a better word) and was bland, bland, bland.
Mexicali ? Only vaguely. Fresh ? Afraid not

Decided to pop in here for lunch for the first time. Ordered the taco salad and a friend ordered the Quesidilla. Very nice and fresh toppings in the taco salad amd the outside of it was so crunchy. At a price of $13.90 I like it! Might come by again if I'm desperate for some Mexican! ^_^

Wouldn't go here again unless I was desperate. Very average food - didn't finish my nachos because they were so bland. If they improved their food the place might be better, because they have a nice spot there.

This placed used to be good but on a recent visit has gone downhill. Used to be fresh food, good service and good value for money. For the same price you could have some fresh sharing plates at a Ponsonby road Mexican place with good service and much nicer decor. Disappointing.

I really enjoy coming to this branch of Mexicali because the service is consistently good, the food is delicious and it is the perfect place to go to for a quick dinner before heading to the movies on Broadway.
The food is not what I would call 'authentic Mexican'; it is more like the American version of Mexican food. That is okay though, because it is still tasty and filling. I usually order either a Burrito ($13.90) which comes with a variety of fillings or the Nachos (also $13.90) which comes with tortilla chips, your choice of meat, beans, cheese, sour cream and salsa.
Most recently, my sister and I tried their 'Macho Nachos', which is part of the 'Signature Favourites' menu (see attached photo). At $16.90, they are HUGE. Best to share them between two otherwise it will be hard finishing them! They come with barbacoa beef, extra chargrilled chicken, refried beans, rice, cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream and guacamole. Absolutely delicious and highly recommend!!!

This Mexicali is consistently great with good and service. Atmosphere is always fun and they have funky music to round out your experience when visiting.
We visited this week for an after work pre seeing friends dinner. I got the beef barbacoa nachos to change it up (normally I get the chicken taco salad which is a must try by the way - you can eat the bowl!), hubby felt like something with a lot of cheese so went for chicken quesadillas with jalapeños. Both were delicious and very filling.
The rest of the menu a items are really good. Have yet to try their tacos though!
They have a great range of drinks available, alcoholic and non alcoholic. We were a bit disappointed to see they didn't have any Dos Equis, as this is a favourite - hopefully they haven't stopped stocking it!

Not the best Mexican food I've had. I wood probably call it a Mexican style "Subway". I definitely wouldn't say it a restaurant experience. Good place to go to get quick lunch. A bit overpriced for what it is. No wonder it was really quiet.

I was all set to have sushi for lunch when I saw a tweet that said something about tacos and I knew I was not going to be able to get Mexican out of my head until I got it so swiftly changed my mind. I don't usually order salads as I'm scared I will still be hungry afterwards however I gave the mango chicken salad a whirl with added guacamole (need to get my good fats in) and I was not disappointed at all! Great for a quick takeaway meal, just be careful with the wraps as the bigger ones can be getting up there in calories so are best as occasional foods ;)

Very average food. Not surprisingly this place was quiet on a Friday evening, yet the tables were in need of a clean, despite there being plenty of staff available. There was an unhygienic feel to the place. Disappointing, won't be going back to the Newmarket location.

This was a quiet place on Anzac evening, and we managed to beat the rush (which was only about six people, to be honest). The staff were generous with the ingredients in our taco salads, even discarding an ugly shell in favour of a pristine one of their own volition to ensure our meals were as appetising as possible. We also grabbed our favourite guava flavoured sodas, which were as sweet as usual. There is ample seating, and the murals and decorations, like most Mexicali venues were in great condition. The tables were all exceptionally clean today, although the lighting is a little dim for my preference. The bathrooms are perfectly serviceable although out of hand towels and possessing an unfortunate turn knob door which made me nervous. T_T
Altogether a pleasant, casual meal with average, fairly bland, but filling food.

Avoid this dump. It's rubbish. Worst so-called Mexican food that I have ever eaten. Bland insipid rubbish. They even stoop as low as to put rice in a burrito to bulk it out! Really low trick. Tables not cleaned promptly. Whole place dirty. Pigeons hanging around. Staff who can't speak English and buggered up my order and overcharged me. Really overpriced drinks for such a greasy spoon place. The so-called Kid menu is a real rip-off; $8 but you have to pay extra for meat !!!! Total rort. When I complained, the unprofessional staff were condescending, rude and unhelpful. Worst service in Newmarket. Never going near that dump again. Avoid!

Mexicali Fresh is one of the options that are high on my list when I am looking for quick, healthy and tasty food. I usually go for the taco salad, because it has a decadent crunchy taco shell, yet feels healthy with mostly vegetables and your choice of protein. Items here are assembled to order, so not only do corn chips and taco shells retain their crunch, but you choose what fillings you want, including how much sour cream or guacamole to add.
I like the fact that they have a self-service salsa bar, so you can adjust your meal with an unlimited supply of pickled onions and/or salsas with varying degrees of hotness. Mexican beer and soft drinks are also available with your meal.
Since pretty much all the food is made from the same basic ingredients, the various options (burritos, nachos, quesadillas, etc.) all feel a bit like eating the same meal in different shapes. It's not something you would want to have every day, but I would pick this over kebabs or most other fast food options.
Note: not all branches of Mexicali are created equal. The one downtown seems pretty dire, with me being served a rancid taco shell once.

This place has been reasonable on other visits, never good but ok- but food a bit bland tonight, not very warm and I thought pricey for what you get - staff look a bit depressed.
Place looked a bit grubby.
I love Mexican food, however, not sure if I will go there again.

I've only been here once, so I'd give it a second go before I deem it bad. It ain't gourmet food, let's put it that way. Generous food portions, friendly staff and warm atmosphere. They have a huge menu. They serve Margaritas; what's not to like!

Came here and I didn't like it. I asked for tacos, and the man got the shell and started adding all the ingredients to it right away. I didn't want the shell and I didn't want onions or cheese. They added everything without letting me have my say. The food was so average. It's just like a fast food place. Messy work, and my tacos were like nacho chips and lettuce... Not filling and not nice

It's the upbeat place that I truly enjoy more than the food.
Food: Generous Serving and they taste good but not great.
Had the Mexican beverages.....not going to be my favourite but worth trying to find out.
Service: Great...the staff are friendly and fast.
A great place to eat and catch up with your friend.

This place is amazing!!!! Love the food, the staff are always friendly and helpful. I go on a regular basis and always lives up to my expectations (which are pretty high) I recommend this place to everyone! The food is great and very good value as I always leave full :)

Great food, great staff, always very satisfied with our meals and stuffed full. Always visit when we come to Auckland.

Food is good, comes out fast and reasonably priced. Would normally come here for a quick eat or if I've subway'd myself out for the week.

Really tasty, fast and fresh- love all the salsas.
Cost is not bad considering it's a big meal.
As far as chain food goes this is awesome.

9 times out of 10 this place leaves me with a smile on my face. I go at least once a week. The food is delicious and appropriately priced however some of the staff are better than others at making things like burritos. I think there needs to be a bit of consistency with the training in order to get consistency with the food. The only meat I dislike is the mince, it's just a bit salty for me.

Epic fail on all levels. We absolutely love Mexican food and were looking forward to our meal here to say the least! Sadly disappointed. Service BAD, Food (mince tacos) was WAY over salty - so much so it was almost inedible...everything else in the tacos was Meh! indeed...
Note to staff: Broken tacos should be binned NOT reformed and served. Will not eat here and risk a lacklustre (understatement) meal ever again.

A good place to take kids and let them choose their own meal. They can also play Playstation while they wait. The service is ok but nothing special.
The food is fresh, tasty and the beer is cold.

This place used to be good when it first started, but they've kinda changed their menu [they have different kinds of meat choices now then they had before, for beef anyway] and i reckon its not as good as before.

About a year ago, the service was really great. I used to go there about 4 times a week and they would always get orders right (which is a given, considering they do put everything together right in front of you) and remember almost everyone's names. I loved going there.
Last week, on 3 separate occasions I witnessed about 2 people trying to remake a burrito after it broke twice. A quesadilla I ordered had barely any cheese. I have also ordered and paid for fruit salsa and not got it in my burrito on several occasions over the last month - consequently the line would be so long that I just couldn't wait in the line again and ask for it.
Complaining on the spot for 3 different errors on the same visit just holds up the cue and I really don't like complaining as I know they're just doing their job.
But it really does makes me quite sad as Mexicali has always gotten a 5++ stars from me, but the service has really gone down hill recently and I am quite reluctant to dine there now.
(also to their defence, to the guy who was disgusted by them microwaving his food, FYI it's actually an industrial high speed oven)

This is a great place to come for a quick lunch or dinner - it's yummy Mexican food that never fails to disappoint. The servings are huge and the staff are SO friendly and helpful! Food is always fresh, the mood is always relaxed and fun and chill. Definitely try it!

This place is awesome. The food is so fresh and it's always good. The staff is very friendly, and it takes just a couple of minutes to get your meal. We usually take the whole family and everyone gets exactly what they want. The kids meals are perfect and I can sit back and enjoy a nice margarita without breaking the bank.

There is nothing like fresh Mexican food made right before your eyes. These guys know how to make you feel like you are part of the family and the pricing is just right. If you're looking for a fresh, casual, meal, then I totally recommend this. Also has a great selection of Mexican Beers and their slushy Margs are awesome!.

the one thing that NZ needs more is Mexican places, and this fits right in that big taco shaped hole in our culinary choices.... by far the best burrito in Auckland (if not NZ) and anywhere thats serves a double decker taco gets an enthusiastic two thumbs up! the ingredients are fresh and the staff are friendly and fast. this is by far my favorite takeaway/fast food place!!! and the decor is very kickin especially for a cheap eats place like this!

A favourite on Friday nights. A sort of subway take on Mexican food (choose your ingredients and watch them make it). Only wish they opened a little earlier in the weekends so I could try the brunch options. (Boyf likes the range of beers available).
