The service is good and the food is stock standard pub grub.

However the Normanby is the perfect place to sit in the afternoon sun slipping on cold beer with a few mates around their large tables.

They have there own parking next door if you can find nothing on the street.

A great Sunday hang out and a place for a no surprise meal.

Excellent prawn twisters and kumara fries (which came with a generous amount of very tasty mustard aioli-type dip).

Beautiful beer (Speights). We love hanging out here at the bar-leaners with a casual beer and some good food to go with it. It has the feel of a classic south island NZ style of bar.

The staff are always smiley and friendly in a southern kind of way too.

Only point for improvement, would be to check that you don’t use any chipped serving bowls for the dip ;)

Otherwise, always a pleasure coming here.

I had a function here for 30 people for our daughters 1st Birthday and they just thought this place was amazing! Service was awesome, waiter Dave looked after us the whole time from beginning to end and was so accommodating it was fantastic. Atmosphere was also great, really laid back and the function room we were in was private and the kids had lots of room to run around which was a big A+ for us! Last but not least the food! Everything was fresh and every dish was delicious! My husband had the Scotchman’s Aged Fillet was perfectly cooked and great jus. I had the Salmon Burger and that was delicious and many of the guests also had the Ribs and they were tender and so yummy to say the least! Totally recommend this place to anyone! Great job Normanby!

Attended a “Third Space” event at this establishment, Feb 2013.
Great place to meet up with friends for the evening. Great outdoor area. Special mention to the Samoan staff member, he especially made the evening, he was consistently friendly, helpful accommodating and efficient. I felt the other 3 or 4 staff members could have customer service / hospitality training (friendly suggestion)
I ordered chicken Ceasar salad, and was pleasantly surprised. There were 6 pf us at the table and all enjoyed their various meals, granted service was slow…perhaps the training of the other staff this evening may have prevented the slow service ??
All in all a lovely evening….

Having regularly visits to it before refurbishment (formerly Cardrona), I was more than disappointed on my first visit as the main change seemed to be an increase in prices and a reduction in quality.
Today after many months of not visiting, I went again as part of a large party. Unfortunately if anything the quality has worsened. Ordering the chicken burger, I was disappointed to receive what was a very small chicken breast that was over cooked and very dry along with a single rasher of bacon from what must’ve been the worlds smallest pig. Both of these laid side by side weren’t large enough to cover the bun (which was also a bit stale). To top this the chips had clearly been out of the fryer for a while before arriving at the table as these were cold.
A lot of other guests also had a bad experience and aren’t planning on returning.

My boyfriend and I dined here last night and unfortunately we were more than a little disappointed. We ordered the Potters Paddock pie which was supposed to be beef, mushrooms and cheese in a pepper and guiness gravy but was actually just pepper gravy beneath pastry. There were so few bits of meat it was embarrassing and what meat was there was in tiny chunks, we spotted one chunk of mushroom but the cheese was completely AWOL. The gravy was completely overpowered by the pepper flavour so you didn’t really get any sense of the guiness if it was in there at all. We also ordered the salmon burger which claimed to be “a huge salmon fillet” – it wasn’t. A better description would have been “a small salmon fillet” and it was overcooked as well. We probably wouldn’t go back as it wasn’t really value for money.
