Reviews for River Valley Cafe

We call in here often, and love it!
- The menu is yummy but have to say my favourite is the chowder and my husband loves the Lambs fry and bacon and the chicken salad!
- The very relaxed atmosphere is fantastic and there is no place better than sitting out in the garden on a warm day with lots of space for privacy.
- Clean and very tidy inside and out.
- Coffee was lovely too. Not many places in the bay can compare.
We love visiting here and we will be back for sure. Thank you for the great service, excellent food and atmosphere.

On our way home we decided to stop at this cafe. We had been here before about 2 years ago and were astounded at the pricing even then. We thought that now it might have new owners but alas, the same people are fleecing the public and tourists.
The shop and cafe have a nice African theme which explains the pricing. I think all ingredients are FedEx’d from Durban individually going by the price and state of their arrival on my plate. I had a BLT which was average. Lettuce was brown at the edges, slightly cold and between 2 slices of molenberg! All for a huge cost of $20! Total rip off. Never ever will I be back until these owners read these reviews and actually do something about the pricing and quality. If you are passing, resist the temptation and drive to Napier. Better quality, pricing and above all, owners who listen to their customers.

We stopped off really to look at the gift shop next door and to have a quick cup of coffee but we chose to have lunch after finding liver and bacon on the menu. It was beautifully cooked and delicious to eat – wasn’t quite sure why the fried egg but I was able to give this to my husband who had pie and fries. The cappuccino was hot and flavoursome and his milkshake was good too. The setting was delightful as were the other customers who stopped to use the cafe. We were happy to pay the prices charged – it’s so out of the way that it would be difficult to get something nearby. I guess if we hadn’t been happy with the prices, we’d have driven on. But we were very impressed and the service was good too.

We made the mistake of going to this cafe recently, desperate after a long drive we pulled in to feed our three children, $11.90 for a pie is ridiculous! $4 for a kids drink is extortion, those drinks wholesale at $1.30!!!! Come on, get real here people, you are not a vineyard in the south of France!!!!!
I ordered a glass of rose and both the staff member who charged me for it and the girl who delivered it said ‘here is your glass of rose’…. as in the flower… if you are going to charge over the top make sure you have the service and knowledge to support it!!!!
We went to the Mission for lunch the next day and happily paid for excellent service and amazing food!
You make NZ’s reputation for being expensive a reality, sort it out, you are embarrassing yourselves.

I went out to this Cafe earlier in the week with a friend for a change… I was really disappointed with the pricing of food and coffee…don’t get me wrong the cake was lovely, the setting is pretty, but it is defiantly over priced, and considering we had just driven 20 minutes out of town (with petrol prices the way they are i would not do it again), i hope they take note with what people are writing as they will soon lose custom as i will tell people and they will tell people, to be honest i don’t know how they have stayed in business as long as they have maybe they rely on tourist traffic!Comment from Tessa C. of River Valley Cafe 31/08/2012

What a mistake it was to try somewhere new today…….. I took a friend out for coffee and we both had to remortgage on the way home!!
Come on people, have you not read the reviews, I wish I had before I went all the way out there……
Pumpkin & Kumera soup for $16.50, with that, I would hope you got to keep the bowl!! A piece of Carrot Cake was $6.90!! A pot of tea was more than a coffee and a kiddies drink was $4!! That is just crazy pricing, and hard to believe that they are still in business, we wont be going back and the word will start to spread!
On the bright side, lovely location and could be a summer winner with the kids but hey that boat has already sailed now I’m sad to say……

Ridiculously high prices for very little. $17.00 for a pie with a bit of salad. Won’t be going back there in a hurry which is a pity as it is a nice setting and the ladies working there were very nice. Oweners need to do some pricing research.

I’ve been to River Valley Cafe on many occasions and the food and coffee are brilliant. The warm chicken salad in particular is absolutely amazing and my husband claims the baileys cheesecake is the best cheesecake he’s ever eaten (and he says this time and time again!).
I highly recommend River Valley to anyone looking for fabulous food, great service and a stunning scenery.

Thought the salad (half a handful of mesclun at almost $7) and slice of quiche (at almost $11) was one of the biggest ripoffs I’ve seen in N.Z.
Coffee was weak.
These people are in business to make money – but not friends

Yes the venue is great but when you order fish and chips and pay 21.90 you expect to get home made battered fish not processed stuff you get from the supermarket will not be going back i hope that this review will help the venue change there way..

Quite a surprise to find such a superb place on a road otherwise lacking in anywhere good to stop. Some of the best coffee we have had in ten years in New Zealand and the best cakes anywhere any time.
Mint clean throughout. Roadside cafes don’t get better than this.

A lovely spot for breakfast, lunch, or coffee. The property is beautiful, and the food is delicious.
