Reviews for Stefano’s Pizzeria

The pizzas here are some of the most delicious in the world…including Italy. The bases are really thin, savoury, and nicely blistered by the hot hot proper stone over. But more important, the toppings are generous with properly good ingredients. Expect things like artichoke hearts, lashings of smoked salmon, ricotta, unusually tasty fennel salami, feta, fresh seasonal herbs. It is quality food, made very affordable, and there’s something on that menu for everyone from gourmets to kids.
Oh, the gardens are rather beautifully lit, subtropical, and delightful in summer.
Waiheke Island is full of uptight vineyards or mediocre restaurants. This one stands out for authenticity and informality. I’ve been about ten times and it’s great.

The food was great, but that was all. After waiting for 45 minutes, we watched our order being given to the next table – who had ordered 20 minutes after us. We told the staff it was our order, but they denied it. Once it had been eaten, they then realized their mistake. No attempt at apology, no attempt to reflect this in the bill, just another 20 minute wait for 5 hungry children. We have lived on Waiheke for 13 years and have visited Stefano’s reasonably regularly. Very disappointing to be treated like this.

Absolutely beautiful, proper Italian pizza! Our waitress was really wonderful. She recommended her fave pizza to us (“Feta e Aglio:
Feta, artichokes, garlic, rosemary and olives”) with the addition of loads of fresh rocket over the top. It was AMAZING!
Very relaxing atmosphere. Pretty frescoes to look at too.
Dessert was delicious.
PS: I was quietly impressed with the ‘composting toilets’ (go Waiheke! Love your green-ness!)

We visited on the Sunday of labour Weekend.
The food was very nice. We had 4 people dinning and had 3 pizza and a risotto. The risotto was not fully cooked and the staff were very good making a fresh one that was very nice. They gave us a $10 discount for the inconvenience :-).
Service was very slow considering we were there at 610pm for a 630pm booking and the restaurant wasn’t full.
In summary, nice food but don’t be in a hurry.

We have been to Stefano’s on many occasions and it is one of our favorite places to dine out on waiheke. My husband is very particular about his pizza and he rates them very highly! Also great for me because I am gluten free and they make delicious gluten free pizzas. They also can do their pasta dishes gluten free too! Would definitely recommend this place. Top service, top food. Great place to go!

Went to this restaurant on the 24th September 2013. They very kindly offered us a voucher for $20 because we are hiring a Bach through Waiheke Holiday Homes. There were 5 people and we all had mains and drank plenty of wine etc. So when we went to pay we had the voucher, the waitress added it up, looked at the voucher and promptly did nothing about it!!! At least the thought was there!! Wouldn’t bother going there again anyway as it is very expensive for pretty basic food.Comment from Stephen H. of Stefano’s Pizzeria 26/09/2013

We thought we would try Stefano’s for a pizza, hoping we would get a lovely example of Italian cooking on the island. Well, how wrong we were!
We ordered the Quattro Stagioni for something with a bit more flavour and received a shockingly sparse pizza. There was not an olive to be seen and we got a slight ‘whiff’ of anchovy here and there! A very disappointing example of a pizza for the inflated price of $25.50! The garlic bread was probably more ordinary bread than garlic bread – I’m sure they must’ve forgotten the garlic! – certainly not worth the $8.00 price tag.
We had added the Pompeii salad to our takeaway menu, thinking this would be somewhat substantial for $13.50. However it consisted of a few pieces of kumara, a smattering of feta cheese and some sorry looking rocket.
While we were waiting, a customer who would’ve purchased around $160-$180 worth of takeaways asked for a plastic bag to carry it all in and was told by the Asian girl who worked there “No bags! No bags!”, so had to carry all the pizza and side dish boxes out himself quite precariously. We couldn’t get over how rude the girl was to this customer, especially since he had spent so much money here!!
When we got our pizza home, we were dismayed to see the pizza hadn’t even been cut into pieces! Amazing!
We will not be returning there and would not recommend it to anyone who is wanting a satisfying, tasty takeaway meal. I would imagine the sit-down experience at this establishment would be no better!Comment from Stephen H. of Stefano’s Pizzeria 26/09/2013

Called up & asked if I needed to make a booking for dinner, pretty much got laughed at.
Showed up & the lady who served me was cold & didn’t even use basic customer service etiquette.
Got showed to a table with no friendly service, the ONLY clean table in the restaurant and there were only 2 other customers.
Ordered an entree, the best thing about our visit was this!
We then ordered a pizza and roast vege salad. The salad arrived after the pizza & the pizza had minimal toppings on it – for nearly $30 you’d think you’d get a good even amount of toppings.
We ate maybe two bites of the salad as there were nearly no roast veges, and what veges were there were covered with salad leaves, too much!
We ate the pizza as we were hungry and left the salad. We had to get out! The staff weren’t even clearing the tables, they just stood at the bar drying glasses. Was a pretty poor environment to eat in, seeing everyone’s leftovers, crumbs, empty bottles etc. Never ever going back and would never recommend to anyone. Paid $58 for a very poor dinner experience. Probably the worst we’ve ever had.

Service was not great but ok. I’m not sure if they came to us or if we went up to the bar to order as the waitress just sat us down and walked off. Finally got to order and the pizzas arrived soon after, which was great. I’ve got to say, for what we ordered they were a bit overpriced. The pizzas tasted ok but the bases were so thin it kept falling apart, maybe that’s the way they are supposed to be. Overall, an average experience. I don’t think I’ll be rushing back.

Customer service was good friendly and helpful we got 2 takeaway pizzas to share between four and they were terrible, they were very tasteless overpriced half cold and didn’t seem like they were cooked properly. We were very disappointed and left feeling hungry won’t be going back there!

Have been to Stefanos a few times and know many others who go there for their great authentic pizzas and live music. A great summer spot

Visited for the third time now and was very disappointed with the latest menu.. It would seem every dish is now designed to be quick and easy, in order to turn tables.
Also you will find no meat based dishes, no chicken, beef, lamb.. No lasagna, cannelloni, bolognese or even prosciutto on any pizza.
It’s still a hit if you enjoy simple (basic, traditional) Italian style pizza.
Good quick service as always..
We shared a few pizzas and left hungry so had mains and desert at another restaurant.Comment from Stephen H. of Stefano’s Pizzeria 23/01/2012

This place is amazing! Such a nice casual place. We dined here over new years with around 25 of us for a birthday dinner an everything was perfect! Staff were amazing an food was just as good! When I go back to Waiheke I will most definitely go back Stefano’s! A+

Agree with the other reviews here, lovely food, great place. And they deliver if you’re feeling particularly lazy

For a friends Birthday we arranged a BYO at Stefanos, as visitors to the island, none of us had been here. We were amazed to say the least! The effort the staff had gone to, to set up a beautiful marquet in the outside courtyard was exceptional and the service was alike throughout the evening. The food was absolutely delicious and very well priced with a range that catered to the vegetarians and gluten free among the group. We had a group of 22 people and everyone commented about the range of the menu, the best pizzas and pastas they have ever had and were most impressed by the service. The staff here are truly here to serve and ensure you have a great night out.
We will certainly return here and recommend to friends.

Stefanoes is a great family restaurant. Wonderful positive staff made a great atmosphere.
Colouring in and chalk board drawing kept the kids happy and the affordable and delicious meal made me even happier.
The most amazing pizza I have ever had.
I would Highly recommend dining here!!!

The best pizza in NZ! I’m a regular and always have great customer service with a smile. Steve the owner is awesome and a great entertainer, ask him to sing the dessert menu to you in an italian accent(you will be in stitches!). Lovely outdoor courtyard during summertime, cosy restaurant when its nippy. great place! you have to try!!

These guys are great. Just had a bit of a menu upgrade which is excellent. Great salad and pizza, super friendly owners. Nice people. Good service. Great value. We go probably once every 2 weeks on average, and I’ve visited a LOT of restaurants in my time so it’s not just a case of not having seen other options

We went here for lunch recently and were so sorry we hadn’t also gone there for dinner the night before. We had divine garlic bread and a really delicious pizza. The pizza choices were really interesting (with heaps of vegetarian choices), and the pastas sounded very inviting. The service was excellent and friendly – I can’t wait to go back!

Excellent food for excellent prices! Nice and friendly staff with a really relaxing environment. If you are ever on Waiheke Island I recommend this small pizzeria in Surfdale.
