Reviews for Sweethearts at Berryfields Restaurant

Six years ago my husband and I were married at Sweethearts and each year since we have returned to celebrate our anniversary. Until this last visit I would have rated the restaurant one of the finest in Christchurch, The food was always beautifully presented and the staff attentive and courteous. Our latest foray to Sweethearts was a huge disappointment. My husband had ordered the salmon but didn’t expect it to be out of a tin and I had ordered a beef fillet on a garlic mash with roast beetroot and fresh watercress. I had ordered this on a previous occasion but didn’t expect to see the beef this time floating in a sea of oil and a grey glutinous mess which was supposed to pass for the mash. The waitress (very nice) returned it to the kitchen where they obviously tried to drain off the oil but it was still inedible. The best part of the meal was the wine! I never complain normally at a restaurant if the food leaves a lot to be desired – I just don’t go back and sad to say Sweethearts won’t be seeing us in the near future. Because I was hungry I figured they surely couldn’t screw up a dessert so ordered a caramelised apple strudel. Well the pastry on top was cooked but the bottom was like a sheet of dough and I couldn’t eat that either. I understand it is under new management and I can only think they should have retained the former chef.

A group of friends visited Sweethearts for a special celebration last weekend and were very impressed. Our expectations were exceeded with not only the friendly and attentive service but also the excellent food. The flavours of the Smoked salmon stack, beef salad, and Mediterranean chicken were fantastic. We all had food envy and ended up sharing our meals to sample the divine tastes. They have a kitchen garden and we saw the chefs out picking produce that I assumed was served to us as part of our lunch, a very nice touch I thought. We will definitely be back.

Visited Sweethearts for the first time last weekend. The ambience and the staff were lovely – muffin and coffee were delicious but we were disappointed with the Akaroa salmon we had. Was quite a small plate and the piece of salmon was quite small and although cooked through, had no flavour or taste whatsoever. The rice risotto dish another one of our group had was a very small serving for the price. I believe the desserts were very nice – I would go back at some stage perhaps but will never order a mains again. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

I had breakfast at Sweethearts this morning to celebrate my daughters birthday. Sadly, it would have been the worst breakfasts we have ever had. The birthday girl and I ordered pancakes, these arrived cold and soggy. When I asked the waitress (who was very pleasant) if the pancakes had been made fresh that morning, she stated they hadn’t!! My other daughter ordered the french toast. Again this arrived soggy and cold (she said the bread was also tough, not light and fluffy, like it’s meant to be in the middle) and the bacon was again cold and limp – not crispy at all!!
The waitress offered us another coffee, but to be honest, by then we were over it. The cost was $70 which would have been fine if we had enjoyed the food – given it was cold and soggy – felt it was not good value.
Also disappointed with the interior decor, last time I was there many years ago, we sat outside, which was lovely. Today due to the weather we sat inside, felt it was very nanaish and smelt musty.
Overall not a good start for my daughters birthday
Would not return!
