Actually didn’t get to sample anything here, went in on a Saturday morning as our usual options were absolutely packed, this place had half a dozen patrons and we just wanted coffee and a snack. We were greeted by a waitress who told us to sit down and she would come over and take our order despite us saying we only wanted coffee. Sat outside for ten minutes and were completely ignored by the three very ‘unbusy’ staff – so we left and will not go back.

I went with friends and we had a really lovely lunch. We shared different taste plates and really enjoyed the food. Service was good and the restaurant really nice. I would return.

We went to The Taste Plate last night (old Bowmans)
We loved the food at Bowmans, however, the food didn’t live up to expectations.
The wontons were delicious. The pork bun was tasteless. The porkbelly was beautifully cooked but tasteless and the slaw that accompanied it was drowned in vinegar and inedible.
The duck was nice but not wow. Side of rice was fine. Side of cauliflower was under cooked and hard.
Overall disappointing.
No coffee as machine had been cleaned for the night, it was just after 9pm

We decided to try the restaurant as the menu and website looked interesting. Well we were really pleased we had lunch there. Had the Pork steam buns, these were the best we have had, the bun was so soft not to mention the shredded pork yum. Our next dish was the salt and pepper prawns – they were cooked to our liking and the black beans and chilli made them so morish you wanted more. My other half chose the half a duck dish. He kept saying you have to try this it is devine. Duck is not my favourite, I did try it and was impessed, beautifully cooked and crispy. Coffee was great We were well satisfied and decided this will be a regular place.

First visit today. Thought the whole experience was seriously disappointing from the surly unsmiling blond waitress to the very ordinary food from the breakfast menu… overcooked bacon with already buttered toast, not everyone likes butter on their toast! Lift your game if you want bums on seats…. won’t be back.

A consistently first-class restaurant whether in its old persona (Bowman’s) or its new. One of those remarkable places – still too rare in New Zealand – where one can get a good cup of coffee and watch the world go by, or sit down to a serious lunch or dinner experience.

We have had some remarkable meals there, Bowman’ and post-Bowman’s, with the new small-plate menu a real culinary triumph. My prawns and pork belly were exciting to eat, as was my wife’s pork won-tons and scallops.

I’d like the owners to make millions of dollars, while keeping the place a Mt Eden secret. For visitors however, it’s a very quick cab ride from downtown, and worth the journey.

Expect tapas meal concept even if you order mains, be it you have the choice to do so from the start. Honestly all the meals were taste sensations and so worthy. Well mastered. Wine selection primo. Wait staff welcoming and friendly with touch of foreign. New decor is subtle but still twee. Loved it. Deee

Excellent food, good and delicate flavour.

We tried the steam bun both chicken and pork belly, very impress with the bun – soft and light. We also tried the crab meat wontons, the prawn salad, pork belly salad, crispy chicken salad, date cigar, fish hapuka tartar, banana fritter and chocolate mousse.

We stopped in on our way to Circus de Soleil for a quick bite. We stuck to 4 x small plates and selected the Pork Won-tons, Steam Bun, Scallops and Prawns + Green salad. Great dishes and delicious flavors with Won-tons and Scallops a favorite. Excellent addition to Mt Eden restaurants and a big step up from Beef Sliders and Mussels. We also had a glass of wine and a beer. Left full and satisfied and worth the $80

We tried it out on their second night post the reincarnation of Bowmans as the more modern Taste Plate. The flavours were fantastic, the pork belly with apple and peanut slaw a taste sensation, as were the Chinese wontons with the crab based ones being the big hit. The staff happily accommodated our 2 young kids by making fish and chips, the fries were so good my husband and I almost ate all of them! The food overall was very good and the wine list also good. My only little complaint is that it could have been perhaps a tad cheaper to be less of a special treat and more of a family neighbourhood regular as Mt Eden is sorely lacking something in that space, but then again the small plates are good value. Please no more Indian Restaurants as 4 is really enough! Wonderful experience.
