I phoned the Spencer on Byron Hotel to make a dinner booking for 19 people from overseas who would be traveling with our company for the next two weeks. The dinner was to be a casual occasion but important because it was their first ‘taste’ of New Zealand hospitality. We are so glad we chose to dine at the Spencer ! A menu was pre-arranged with choices to suit everyone ~ and very reasonably priced. The table was set beautifully, setting the scene for our people to feel that the occasion was special. Feeding that many people can be a slow process but this was not the case. The staff were very professional and attentive and worked smoothly as a team in the most unobtrusive way. Our meals were delivered without long delays and the food was really excellent. We were very impressed by the quality of service and presentation of the meals and will certainly repeat the experience with our future groups.
Thank you Dining Room Team. You added a touch of class to an enjoyable occasion.
Red Carpet Tours.
What a huge disappointment! We expected a fairly decent meal being as this is a 4+ star hotel, but it was appalling. When you enter the smell of old chip fat wafts in the air, so you still smell of it when you leave.
The service was absolutely one of the worst that I have ever received in a restaurant anywhere! We were ignored constantly, when we went to find the staff to order they had no idea about the menu/no idea what was gluten free etc. They were all aimless walking around and so very rude.
The menu was really average and not at all up to date, the decor was tired and dirty. It was like an old cafe hidden away somewhere with staff who really hated their jobs, rather than a supposedly nice hotel.
We left and will never ever go back. Such a shame really, I usually always find something positive in every restaurant, but there really is nothing about this place!
Thank you Yelena for all your hard work in organising my special dinner on Saturday 5th October.
Everything was delicious including the cake.
I particularly wanted to thank lady Chef, who did a marvellous job, and in fact offed a chicken dish, instead of the pork belly which one person accepted.
We would very happily come again to Thyme Restaurant.
We went to Spencer on Byron for the degustation menu as a friend had given us vouchers because they were displeased with their degustation menu. The service was lovely but the food was disappointing. The components involved in the menu didn’t work well together for me and many of the other people who ate the degustation menu with me were also disappointed. Maybe Thyme Restaurant needs a new degustation menu, one that has been tested and tried with components that actually worked together. The apple jelly was a bit too hard, maybe too many gelatine leaves used if it was made by hand? The bread and butter pudding tasted as if it had been heated up in the microwave, bread and butter pudding in my view is something that needs to be made fresh and then served and this is hard for an item such as this in a restaurant. Mind you, the mulled wine foam was lovely. Will not be returning unless there is a menu/degustation menu change.
We went to Thyme for a 50th wedding anniversary and it was superb. Great food, great atmosphere and excellent service (party of 30). Highly recommended and looks good for a more intimate dinner too with sophisticated surroundings and ambience.
We recently celebrated my fathers 70th birthday at Thyme Restaurant. It was excellent! The food was delicious, the atmosphere with the live pianist was great, the service was impeccable and all our guests had a wonderful time. Yelena and the team really did a fantastic job of looking after our group of 40. Dad had a wonderful night. Thanks to everyone involved.
I chose Thyme Restaurant to celebrate my 60th birthday with family & friends. Yelena went out of her way to make sure that I would enjoy my birthday luncheon and I appreciated her attention to small details. The meal was excellent, the service was excellent, the table setting was excellent. All in all an excellent function. Thank you Yelena and team.
Knew that this was going to be a bad experience from the outset. Had trouble getting our parking validated. Food was just average. No decaf coffee available. They stuffed up our bill, overcharging us by $30-00 (they forgot to apply the 15% discount for ordering before 1:00 p.m., and charged us for coffees we never had). They then offered us a $30-00 voucher in lieu of the amount overcharged, which was completely unacceptable. Finally sorted out after much negotiation (the maitre’d was Chinese, and had trouble communicating). Overall, a very poor dining experience.
My godmother and I lunched there today with a deal voucher I purchased. Occasionally the vouchers do not always give you the best customer service and food, but today the service and food were beautiful. Staff very professional and helpful and food served with a smile – wonderful! Plus the piano in the background just completed a lovely experience
Went to Thyme last night after reading some good reviews online. I’m always nervous trying a new restaurant but turned out to be a great choice – every part of the evening was perfect. The waitress was friendly and efficient without being too fussy, and the food was delicious. We were also given a free bottle of bubbles as we had a table of six and were dining on my birthday. Very surprised we were the only people dining!
Undoubtedly one of the nicest restaurants for lunch around. Pure class with attention to detail by the staff a refreshing change. Food quality was excellent for both of us. Had all 3 courses because menu was so nice. Looking forward to a return visit.
Invited my friends for lunch at Thyme restaurant at Spencer on Byron in Takapuna yesterday. The atmosphere was excellent. We ordered two grilled steak mains, one was cooked perfectly and the other was with large area of burnt and hardened surface with horrible burning smell. When we raised our concern to the staff, one of them was arrogant, sarcastic and offensive. His unprofessional service really spoiled our dining mood and tarnished the reputation of the restaurant.
Used a special offer for lunch this week and went with wife and 3 yr old. The main course took an age to appear and think they had a bit of a problem in the kitchen. However the food was excellent, service of waiting staff exemplary and the ambiance and atmosphere delightful. The $10.50 kids menu was great – fish and chips perfect and the ice cream sundae super. Perfect for older kids than ours. Adult meals very good, well presented with some lovely sauces. The lemon pudding was probably best sweet tasted in NZ in 6 years. Small gripe: Wife’s bread and butter pudding really needs IMO some raisins and sultanas rather than this perhaps more French version. (They discounted the bill for us due to the delay which was neither requested nor expected but was a very good gesture)- We will definitely be returning. A bientot. Would give 4.5 out of 5 but they do not seem to do 1/2′s so decided to give 5 stars.
Took friends to dine here last night – my second time. Just as impressive as first. They all loved it. Everything is excellent about this restaurant. The quiet, elegant surroundings, food and presentation with WOW factor, impeccable service, harpist playing soft music in background. Best restaurant on the Shore. Will be coming here again.
This is fine dining at its BEST! Excellent food, by a very talented chef! Atmosphere and surroundings were beautiful, really enjoyed the live Pianist jamming his keys! Service was A+ Highly recommended ! Thank you for an enjoyable night! very impressed
We recently dined at Thyme restaurant at Spencer on Byron in Takapuna, for my 40th birthday.
From when we arrived to the service, and the meal to the birthday cake and bottle of bubbly that was supplied to us, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Our guests that had come also commented on the food and the surroundings.
We will definitely be bringing out of town ( and country) guests here to enjoy the experience that is the Thyme restaurant.
Thank You to the lovely staff that were there on the night of 17th Sept 2011.
