Reviews for U-Thai Restaurant

Unfortunately, we must’ve struck a bad day, or new staff, or something, because it was not good at all.
I made a booking on a Thursday, for a midday lunch for a group of people six days later.
We arrived, and were shown to our table.
The wait staff came out, but didn’t appear to speak or understand English. She took one person’s order for a drink [there were 11 of us] and disappeared!
She came back with this drink and disappeared again.
Eventually, [by now it was 12:15pm] we placed our food and drinks orders.
At 12:30pm we were still waiting for our drinks.
At 12:45pm we were still waiting for our food.
At 12:55pm, our food arrived [except for one, which was subsequently cancelled due to the slowness - non- existence of the service] which was luke-warm if not cold, and definitely nothing special as to make me want to eat here again. We were all due back at work at 1pm, so we all had to rush down out food and leave.Comment from Pichamon R. of U-Thai Restaurant 18/02/2014

My family went there because of the voucher deal. The service was good, and the waitress was friendly. However, they seemed to be very short-staffed.
The curry that we ordered were Masaman Beef, Red Duck Curry, and Panang Curry Tofu. They were all the same curry, we could not distinguish the difference between the curry they used. The texture of the curry was all very runny. My understanding of Masaman Beef should not have the runny red curry texture, but they had peanuts in it.
I would not use the word bad to describe the food, but I would not visit there again.

Service fantastic, very friendly
But the food was AMAZING…Looooved it, when I read what the desert was I though hmm that’s weird not sure if I’ll like that…But it was warm, smooth not too sweet just perfect would loooove to go there again, but well heading back to Wellington.

I had a very nice tofu red curry today for lunch, which was only $9.90 (lunchtime special price). It had all the flavours you would expect – sweetness, tanginess, subtle spices. Heaps of yummy bamboo strips, and lots of sauce to soak right through all of my rice.
The cool thing about the main room here, is the clear skylights above that cover the whole ceiling, which lets the sun stream in. I loved sitting inside on this windy day, but in full sunshine. The building itself and bathrooms need a bit of a spruce up, but it’s a quaint place with lots of Thai trinkets around the walls, pretty sun-umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, and plenty of character.
I also liked the relaxing music, which had birds chirping in it (unless they were real birds outside?!) … it gave the place a feeling of oasis.
Friendly waitress was helpful and really efficient.
Very fast service for a quick lunch.

Pretty good restaurant. We went with some colleagues and for the price of the meal ($14 for dinner with Entertainment Book), it was what I expected. The service was good. The quality of food was mixed – Prawn Pad Thai was yummy, Panang Curry was nicely flavoured but the Tofu Vegetable dish was bad – the deep fried tofu was unseasoned and dripping in oil, the vegetables (carrots, cabbage) were raw. The service was alright, friendly waitresses, but not very helpful – I asked for a different placemat because my one was sticky, and received an equally sticky one.
The deco seemed a bit lacking with many places in obvious need of renovations.
We went back again after Dee Jai Thai became U-Thai and hoped for more flavours in the food. After an hour and a half wait for our mains, we were starving and had high expectations, which were sadly not met. Our dishes (Pad Thai, Tofu Curry and Prawn Green Curry) did not taste authentic, but rather a westernized version of what Thai food should be. Also, this place does not seem to cater very well to bigger parties, we reserved two tables for a celebratory dinner, and whilst one table was happily tucking into their mains, the other table waited and waited (until the other table had almost finished) before receiving our first mains. Verdict – disappointing. Will probably not be visiting again.Comment from Pichamon R. of U-Thai Restaurant 16/09/2013

Love it – great food, nice people! We go there regularly with business and friends and always have the best experience. The price and the quality of the food is always good and the service is very friendly and helpful.

I love this restaurant.
Excellent service, exquisite food, authentic decor and fair prices.
Favourite dishes = The duck green curry! The tom yum soup was delicious also. I tried the pad Thai at lunch and it was awesome too.
The only suggestion I would make is the lighting – but I guess one could argue that the dark hues add to the ambiance?

Near my work, so I recommend lunch specials which are pretty good value for money. Been here for dinner a couple times with large groups as well and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed dining here, service has always been top notch, prices are relative given its location and still ok value for money, my only critism is that it has pretty poor lighting and entrees and desert menu is abit lacking.

Go here for lunch 1-2 times a week as it’s down the road from work. The Lunch Specials are great at $9.90! Pad Thai is nice with a lot of flavour.
Had dinner there once and it was OK. Not as good as the lunch though (maybe difference cook?) and slightly more expensive than the other Thai restaurants we’ve been to.
Service was friendly and good. Nice decor inside.

My partner and I popped in after finding this place in the Entertainment Book – what a beaut find! Walking through corridor to restaurant it’s like traveling out of busy Newmarket and into Asia.
We were in a bit of a rush as our movie started in an hour, but the waitresses were very attentive and reassured us that time wouldn’t be a problem – which it definitely wasn’t. Our food arrived quickly (not so quickly that we were worried about pre-made orders) and it was delicious! I had the duck & veges and the boy had the chilli lamb. Both were fabulous with just the right amount of heat.
The only downside to the whole experience was despite the restaurant being virtually empty when we arrived (one other couple there already) the next couple to walk in were seated at the table next to ours. Interesting choice.
Would highly recommend – great food and fair prices.
